John Gutter is the first level of Pizza Tower and is the first level of the Tower Lobby. Also, the only level of John Gutter Hall.

This level takes place at the entrance of the tower, featuring a jungle and an underground city, and many Pillar John-like creatures and statues scattered around the level.

The level's titlecard shows an anxious Peppino under a small spotlight, surrounded by several copies of Pillar John.

Collectables[]

The first Toppin is located out in the open in the room immediately after the entrance, directly where the player naturally moves.

The second Toppin is out in the open in the room accessed from the first warp box. It is on a platform that can be easily accessed with a ladder.

The third Toppin is directly where the player must go to progress in the room directly after the Cheese Toppin's room.

The fourth Toppin is on a platform in the large hallway where the player progresses right to to the room before Pizza Time. The Toppin is out in the open on this platform, and the wall in front of it is breakable, allowing the player to continue running without turning back around to go underneath.

The fifth Toppin is located on a platform in the room before Pillar John's. It is near the top, guarded by a Forknight, though it is out in the open.

Gerome is located in the room directly before Pillar John's. He is behind a Fake Wall that has plenty of visible open space to see Gerome, and the wall can be broken at any speed or with a grab.

The door to the John Gutter Treasure is located in the hallway room where the Tomato Toppin was. Running on the lower section, once the player has smashed the iron block, they can super jump from that spot to reach the door in the ceiling. This door can be reached before Pizza Time. This door can also be unlocked before Pizza Time with Gerome by doing a frame perfect jump.

Pumpkin is located on the platform near the entrance to the city section with 2 Cheeseslimes on it.

Secrets[]

In the room to the left of the area with the Cheese Toppin, part of the hanging ceiling of the level is discolored, near where the player enters the room. The player must super jump into this block to break it, entering the secret room.

This secret room consists of small solid platforms with small and large toppings sprinkled on them, connected by strings of semisolid platforms. The player must turn very quickly on these platforms to retain a constant dash, though it is not necessary to complete the secret.

In the room with platforms that leads to Pillar John's room, the rightmost area on the floor has a spot with a white eye marked on the floor. Ground pounding this spot breaks the ground to reveal a secret.

This secret stage is a short vertical climb where the player must use the mach dash to scale the walls, automatically grabbing the large toppings on top. The player will have to hop to change direction once, as to not run off the edge of the map.

After Pizza Time has begun, the player will enter a room in which they must progress downwards while fighting enemies. The player needs to run into a wall with cracks on it at Mach 2, which is located on the segment directly before the player can descend down into the warp box. Mach 2 can be reached by running at the wall directly from the opposite wall.

This secret requires the player to mach dash through steel blocks while retaining momentum by wall jumping.

Trivia[]

  • As the selection of playable levels expanded over the course of Pizza Tower's development, John Gutter became the third to be the introductory level of a demo release. The first was Oregano Desert and the second was Pizzascape.
  • The long Pillar John seen in the first few rooms changes appearance during Pizza Time. It gains a more angry look and opens its eyes, revealing yellow-ring shaped pupils, like those of the regular Pillar John.
  • Since the assets of the level were designed before Pillar John's current design, the Johns are noticeably rounder and have brow ridges instead of eyebrows.
  • Before the December Patreon Build, John Gutter was sort of tutorial level.
  • After beating The Noise, the level was originally supposed to permanently transform into Noise Gutter, all of the Forknights replaced by by Noiseys. The level music would also be replaced with The Noise's Jam Packed Radical Anthem.
  • This level was at first titled Entrance in the December Patreon Build before getting its final name.
  • The Chef Task in this level, "Primate Rage", requires players to get a combo of 99 in this level. This requires killing every single enemy in the level, including ones in Lap 2.
  • Upon entering this stage, the game's window will rename itself to "A John Graveyard... in the Pizza Tower".
  • In this level, Pizza Tower Guy is located in the Pillar John room, near Pillar John
  • John Gutter's first background was first used in Demo 2 as Ancient level's background
